Controversial Marriage Bills By Rep. Cody Vasut Stir Up Texas Politics
Things are heating up in the Lone Star State’s political landscape as Texas Rep. Cody Vasut, representing Brazoria County, introduces a pair of eyebrow-raising marriage bills. Vasut, a self-described "conservative problem solver" and "proud family man", is turning heads with proposals that critics say could reshape how Texans tie—and untie—the knot.
First up is HB 931, which aims to introduce "covenant marriages" to Texas. If passed, couples would need to commit to at least five hours of premarital counseling and sign an agreement pledging to do everything possible to preserve their marriage. While divorce would still be allowed under traditional grounds like infidelity or cruelty, couples would need to attend counseling before opting for a no-fault divorce.
The concept of covenant marriages isn’t new—Louisiana, Arkansas, and Arizona already allow them—but adoption rates have been minimal. Critics call these laws "symbolic," while supporters say they’re a way to strengthen the commitment between partners. Vasut’s proposal brings the debate to Texas, where marriage and family values are often a hot topic.
The second bill, HB 732, raises even more eyebrows. It seeks to remove the option of annulling a marriage due to "permanent impotence." Historically, this has been a provision for marriages where physical intimacy wasn’t possible, but Vasut’s bill would eliminate that option entirely.
Rep. Gene WuSupporters say the bills are about promoting accountability and preserving the sanctity of marriage. With no-fault divorce already under scrutiny by some conservatives nationwide, these bills could set the stage for Texas to lead a new front in the culture wars.
As the January legislative session approaches, one thing is certain: Texas is gearing up for a heated debate on what marriage—and divorce—should look like in the modern era. Buckle up, y’all, because this one’s going to be a wild ride!
