By 8:15 AM, the fire was under control and contained to the affected property, though crews are still working to completely extinguish the flames. Preliminary investigations suggest that high winds played a role in the rapid spread of the fire from the home to the vehicle, a factor that could have turned a small blaze into a major disaster if not promptly contained.

What should you do if your house catches on fire?

When a house fire breaks out, every second counts. Here’s what to do immediately if you find yourself in this situation:

  • Stay Calm and Act Fast:
Keep your cool—panic only slows you down. Your priority is to get everyone out safely.

  • Alert Everyone:
Shout “Fire!” so that everyone in the home hears the alarm, even if the smoke or flames aren’t visible yet.

  • Call 911:
Dial 911 as soon as you’re safely outside. Don’t wait to grab your phone if you’re in danger.

  • Evacuate Immediately:
Use your pre-planned escape routes. If smoke is present, stay low to the ground where the air is clearer.

    • If possible, close doors behind you to help contain the fire.
    • Do not use elevators if you’re in a multi-story building.
  • Do Not Re-enter:
Once you’ve evacuated, stay out. Do not go back inside for any reason—even if you think you might have forgotten something.

  • Help Those in Need:
If someone is injured or having trouble, call for help immediately but don’t risk your own safety.

  • If Trapped, Signal for Help:
If you cannot evacuate, go to a room with a window, close the door, and use a wet cloth to seal cracks. Call 911 and signal with a flashlight or brightly colored cloth.

  • Plan Ahead:
Make sure you have an escape plan for your family and practice it regularly. Ensure everyone knows at least two ways out of your home.
