Early Voting Locations in Lubbock County for May 1 Election Date
We're just over a week away from the start of early voting for the May 1 Local Option (municipal) election date in Texas.
In Lubbock County there are two high-profile elections occurring in this 'election off-year'.
The first is for City of Lubbock voters, as they will decide whether or not to pass an ordinance which would ban abortions from being performed in Lubbock. You may have also heard this proposed ordinance as referred to as the 'Sanctuary City for the Unborn'.
Using the rarely used petition process, supporters of the proposed ordinance gathered the necessary petition signatures to present the ordinance to the Lubbock City Council last year. The council unanimously voted against the ordinance, and Lubbock's city charter now requires a vote of the city's citizens.
Opponents who have spoken out against the proposed ordinance have said the City of Lubbock doesn't have standing to try to outlaw a practice which was approved by a Supreme Court decision.
The second high-profile election is for Lubbock-Cooper ISD residents.
Lubbock-Cooper ISD is proposing a $420 million bond, which would fund campus and facilities construction for an eight to 10-year period.
The bond is being split into three separate propositions: the first is for constructing new campuses, specifically a second high school, third middle school, and sixth elementary school. The second bond proposition is for upgrades at existing campuses, including flooring, walls, paint and HVAC, The third bond proposition is for the construction of new athletic facilities at the district's new campuses.
