Elon Musk’s Rumored Texas Mansion and His Quest for ‘Family Utopia’
When it comes to Elon Musk, nothing is ever ordinary—including his taste in real estate. From historic mansions to minimalist tiny homes, Musk’s housing decisions are as eclectic and weird as his visionary projects.
Recently, rumors have swirled about Musk building a $35 million “family lair” here in Texas, designed to house his 11 children and their mothers under one roof. Musk says it ain't happening, but whispers of a “Texas utopia” persist, fueled by his previous development plans for Snailbrook, a town built for his SpaceX and Boring Company employees.
Musk has--or had--a LOT of homes. Here's the breakdown...
One of Musk’s most iconic purchases was the former Bel-Air home of the HI-larious Gene Wilder, the original Willy Wonka! Musk sold it in 2020 to Wilder’s nephew and his wife, even extending them a loan to close the deal. Unfortunately, the couple defaulted, and now the home is back on the market for $12.95 million.
Musk also owned a sprawling Hillsborough, California, mansion purchased in 2017 for $23.4 million. It's a 1912 estate featuring a library with leather walls, a chef’s kitchen, and cocktail rooms straight out of a movie set. Musk listed the property for $37.5 million but eventually sold it for $32 million.
But in 2020, Musk made headlines when he announced plans to sell all of his mansions and embrace a minimalist lifestyle. True to his word, he made a $50,000 tiny home in Boca Chica, Texas, his primary residence. This compact “Casita,” built by a company called Boxabl, is near SpaceX’s launch facility and serves as a hub for Musk’s meetings and brainstorming sessions..
Whether it’s a mansion, a tiny house, or a rumored compound here in the Lone Star state, Musk’s housing choices always make headlines. What’s next—a tiny house on Mars? With this dude, anything’s possible.
