Former Deacon Sues Lubbock Diocese for Defamation
A former deacon who preached within the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock is suing the Diocese for falsely accusing him of sexual abuse.
Jesus Guerrero of Lubbock was a Deacon at Our Lady of Grace from 1997 to 2003, and was suspended in 2003. In January, Guerrero was named by the Catholic Diocese of Lubbock as an individual “credibly accused of sexual abuse of minor”.
Now, Guerrero is suing the diocese for over $1 million dollars for libel and defamation. The suit says Guerrero’s reputation has been destroyed by the listing of his name among those who accused of sexually abusing minors.
In January, The Diocese of Lubbock was just one of fifteen Diocese across Texas that released names of clergy that the church said were "credibly" accused of sexual abuse. And Gerrero's name appeared on a list with three others.
