Governor Greg Abbott Signs Bill Changing Marriage Statute
On Thursday (June 15), Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill into law which changes the marriage statute in Texas.
KAMC News reports, Senate Bill 1705 would not allow a person younger than 18 years old from marrying unless a judge consents. SB 1705 would also prohibit anyone under 16 years old from getting married at all.
Under previous state law, Texas residents had to be at least 18 years old to independently consent to marriage. For persons between 16 to 18 years old, parental consent was required.
Also, under previous law, Texas had no statutory age "floor" for marriage, meaning a judge could approve a child of any age to marry.
