Saturday night, the Houston Texans beat the San Francisco 49ers 23-10 in the 2015 preseason opener for both teams.

The Texans three quarterbacks, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage combined to pass for 254 yards and two touchdowns. Hoyer went 2/4 passing for 67 yards and a touchdown and Savage went 8/14 passing with one touchdown.  None of the Texans quarterbacks threw an interception.

Starting in place of the injured Arian Foster, Alfred Blue, rushed 9 times for 59 yards, including a 32 yard run for Houston.

Some of the NFL's new rules ended up adjusting strategy during the game.

After Hoyer's 58 yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts (pictured), at the 11:22 mark of the first quarter, the Texans elected to go for a two-point conversion rather than kicking an extra point from the 15 yard line. On the two-point conversion attempt, Hoyer found DeAndre Hopkins open in the end zone for a back shoulder throw. The conversion gave the Texans an 8-0 lead they would hold on to for the rest of the quarter.

The 49ers' 10 points all came in the second quarter, with backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert throwing a 10 yard touchdown pass to TE Garrett Celek.

Down 10-8 to start the third quarter, Texans third string quarterback Tom Savage took over the quarterbacking duties. Savage engineering a scoring drive, capped off with an 11 yard touchdown pass to rookie Jaelen Strong.

Meanwhile, Hoyer and Mallett are battling for the starting quarterback position and Hoyer received the start against San Francisco.  During the postgame press conference, head coach Bill O'Brien said Mallett will start next week against the Denver Broncos.

The Texans are this year's featured team on HBO's "Hard Knocks", the next episode is Tuesday night at 9pm CDT.
