Here in Lubbock, we all know our money stretches WAY more than it does in places like Dallas, Austin, or heaven forbid, California. But a new national survey tried to nail down the number people consider the “perfect” salary — the sweet spot where you’re not living paycheck-to-paycheck, but you’re not trying to manage lottery-winner problems either.

The magic number? $74,000 a year.

Yep. Not $100K. Not $200K. Just a nice, steady $74,000.

Why $74K?

On paper, it might sound a little random — especially when you think about the price of groceries these days, or how much rent has gone up even in Lubbock. But according to the research, $74,000 is where most people say they’d be able to cover bills, enjoy a little breathing room, and still have something left over for fun.

And honestly, here in the Hub City, that number feels a lot more realistic than it might in bigger metros. Housing is still cheaper, your dollar goes further at the grocery store, and $74K in Lubbock buys a whole lot more than it does in Austin or Houston.

Not Everyone Agrees

Of course, not everyone’s on board with that number. About 19% of folks in the survey said they’d need at least six figures to feel comfortable. And here’s another kicker: half of working Americans say they’re underpaid for the lifestyle they want. No shocker there — nearly a quarter of people flat-out admitted they’re unhappy with their current paycheck.

Side Hustle Nation

That’s where side hustles come in. The survey says 69% of Americans are looking for extra ways to make money, and about one in three are already considering starting a side gig. Everything from driving for Uber to selling crafts online is fair game — and 29% already have a side hustle running on top of their regular 9-to-5.

Here in Lubbock, that might mean anything from running a food truck on weekends, to working the concessions on Tech game days, or even selling crafts at local markets.

What’s Your Number?

So, is $74,000 really the “perfect” salary for Lubbock? For some folks, it probably hits just right. For others, that number might feel too low — or maybe even higher than what they’d actually need to feel comfortable here.

The question is: What would YOUR perfect number be?
