Immerse Yourself In Cowboy Storytelling At The Lone Star Poetry Gathering
Alright, folks, if you’ve got a love for cowboy culture, storytelling, and good ol’ Western music, then start making plans, because the Fifth Annual Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering is riding into Alpine, Texas, February 20-22, 2025 at Sul Ross State University.
Now, if you’re thinking, Cowboy poetry? Is that really a thing?—then partner, you’re missing out! This isn’t some fancy, highbrow poetry reading where people snap their fingers instead of clapping. This is real-deal, straight-from-the-saddle cowboy storytelling—tales about ranch life, wide-open spaces, and hard-earned wisdom passed down through generations.
A Cowboy Tradition That Won’t Quit
This event started back in 2019, thanks to Bob Saul, a seventh-generation Texas rancher who grew up on one of Charles Goodnight’s historic ranches. Before that, Alpine hosted the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering for over 33 years, so when that ended, Bob and his crew made sure the tradition lived on.
“We formed a new nonprofit and moved forward with the same energy and spirit as before,” Saul said. “Again this year, we’ll have an historic event in Alpine, Texas, with award-winning cowboy poets, singer-songwriters, and old-time cowboys.”
An All-Star Lineup of Western Wordsmiths
This year’s gathering features some of the biggest names in cowboy poetry and Western music, including:
Andy Hedges
R.W. Hampton
Kristyn Harris
Jay Snider
Ross Knox
Trinity Seely
Chuck & Hallie Milner
Pipp Gillette (with Lloyd Wright)
Longtime cowboy poet Andy Hedges sums it up perfectly: “These days, it’s like going to a reunion. It’s a time to see old and new friends and revel in our shared appreciation for the arts and culture of the working cowboy.”
