Jones Stadium Is Back As AT&T Steps Away From Naming Rights
The Jones Stadium Name Change: What It Really Means for Texas Tech Fans
Jones AT&T Stadium is no more — at least for now. As of this moment, it’s simply Jones Stadium again.
For reasons that haven’t been publicly detailed, AT&T has stepped away from the naming-rights deal. There’s no drama, no fallout, and no real reason to panic. Remember, it’s gone through evolutions before: Jones SBC Stadium, then Jones AT&T Stadium beginning in 2006. After twenty years, that chapter has just come to an end.
Reports say there’s no bad blood and AT&T will continue working with Texas Tech University in other areas. No one needs to torch their phone contract or start a boycott.
So what’s really going on?
💡 Why is AT&T no longer sponsoring Jones Stadium
The simplest explanation — and this is pure speculation on my part — is that the price went up. With Tech football stepping into a new tier of national exposure, the naming rights to the Jones are likely more expensive than ever. AT&T may have simply decided the investment no longer made sense for them.
And that points to the bigger truth — it’s hard to quantify how stadium naming rights translate into actual profit. I’m sure they do something, but the ROI is famously tough to track.
There’s also another awkward reality: people like me don’t always use the sponsor’s name on air. I almost never said “Jones AT&T Stadium” — it was always “The Jones.” And part of what sponsors are paying for is repeated verbal and written branding across media. If the announcers, bloggers, and fans don’t use it, that’s a lot of value lost.
So now we’re in a holding pattern. Unless someone steps up with cash, vision, and a name that doesn’t sound like a bowl-game punchline, it looks like it’ll just be Jones Stadium through 2026.
Of course, if Tech is already pulling down the AT&T signage, it might also be the perfect moment for a new partner to swoop in. Fingers crossed we don’t end up with something goofy like the Jones-Tostitos 3D Super Hot & Crunchy Stadium.
