One of Lubbock’s Starbucks locations has quietly closed, leaving regular customers surprised. The sudden shutdown has sparked questions about the future of other Starbucks stores across the city. As more chains adjust operations and rethink their locations, many are wondering if this closure is an isolated event or part of a bigger change coming to Lubbock.

Which Lubbock Starbucks Location Just Closed?

The location at  6005 Slide, across from South Plains Mall, was closed permanently. This was a relatively new Starbucks. It appears that the closure was part of a larger, nationwide restructuring plan that began implementation in late September.

How Starbucks Has Been Restructuring Nationwide

According to a press release from Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, stores that were not good candidates for the "Back to Starbucks" plan were shuttered.

During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed.

In other words, this location did not meet the specs required for the "Back to Starbucks" plan, or was financially underperforming. According to Newsweek, about 180 total locations will close. Newsweek listed several other Texas locations in large cities as other casualties of the review.

Could More Lubbock Starbucks Locations Close Soon?

It is probably unlikely that Lubbock loses another Starbucks by the end of the year, as the holidays are a robust time for coffee sales and gift card purchases. However, Lubbock is seeing plenty of competition in the coffee game- from cozy local coffee shops with unique personalities and offerings, to several other fast-service chains, Starbucks is now just one of many options for folks in the Hub City.
