Not everybody wants a couch potato kitty.

Some cats actually want a job!

Across West Texas, more farms, barns, shops, and even warehouses are turning to "working cats," often lovingly called "spicy kittens," to help control the rat and mice populations naturally.

Save Money and The Environment

Instead of entirely relying on chemicals and traps, these kitties patrol properties and handle business the old-fashioned way. They're just tiny little furry security guards, ready to work the night shift in exchange for food, water, and a warm place to sleep between shifts.

Working Kitties

A local flyer came across my Facebook feed today from Lubbock Animal Services, where they advertised the kitties as "Rodent Control Specialists," and the description looked more like a job posting than an adoption ad. It was pretty cute. The post described the cats as:

  • Expert mouse and rat patrol
  • Night shift specialist
  • No payroll required
  • Fixed and vaccinated before hire (BIG PLUS, y'all!)

So far, it's the best West Texas cat resume I've ever come across.

These Aren't Your Average House Cats

No, these kitties won't want to sit in your lap and watch Netflix for hours. Many of them are semi-feral, or simply prefer outdoor life, but that's what makes them effective. They are independent, territorial, and perfectly content to patrol feed rooms, barns, sheds, workshops, equipment yards, and any number of places you may find pesky critters.

Become A Hero!

The best part? Adopting a working cat gives hard-to-place shelter kitties a second chance at life. Some kitties just are NOT suited for indoor life, but they totally thrive when they are given space and purpose outdoors.

If your shed has become a nightclub for mice, you may not need an exterminator. You might just need a cute little unemployed criminal with whiskers and teeth!
