A recent post on Reddit asked users which city in Texas was the most pretentious.
According to Merriam-Webster, pretentious means expressing importance, worth, or stature that is unwarranted, affected, or exaggerated
Unsurprisingly, most cities listed below are part of the Dallas/Fort Worth major metropolitan area. I lived in this area for many years and agree with most of the cities on this list. In fact, I and the rest of the bar staff where I worked at the time coined a phrase that caught on like wildfire.
"Thirty thousand dollars a year millionaires." That's what we called these people. Why?
These folks would come into the bar acting like they owned the place. They would wear super expensive clothing and drive really nice cars. But they were always begging other patrons to buy them drinks and whatnot. Why? Because they were terribly in debt. They wanted to give off the illusion of wealth on a $30,000-a-year salary.
While Texas may be known for its friendly hospitality and down-to-earth charm, there are certain cities that take themselves a little too seriously. Whether it's the hipster haven of Austin or the opulent excess of Dallas, pretentiousness runs deep in the heart of the Lone Star State. So, the next time you find yourself in Texas, remember to pack your sense of humor and leave your pretensions at the door.
