Halloween decorations are going up all across East Texas. Homeowners are creating gigantic spiderwebs from their roof to the ground, ghosts are being hung from trees, 14' tall skeletons are standing at attention and inflatables of all kinds are helping to create a spooky feeling along with some special lighting.

With all of these decorations, you might notice quite a few purple porch lights lighting up the October night in neighborhoods throughout Tyler and Longview. You might think it's because of Halloween, and that may be partially true, but homes with purple porch lights may also signify support for a special group of people.

While you may know October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The purple porch light is often seen as a sign of support for the survivors of domestic violence.

The purple light movement has a motto, 'Shine a light and save a life'. People will display this light to show support while some victims use the light as a sign of solidarity to show that it can happen to anyone. (MSN)

Unfortunately, domestic violence happens every day to women, men, and families across East Texas. If you are in a position and are experiencing domestic violence there is help. It may not be easy to reach out for help because of intimidation or fear, but you deserve more and deserve better. There are some great resources available in Tyler and Longview.

So when you see a purple porch light on during this time of the year, or anytime, it's not just a decorative item, it could be someone sending a special message to others letting them know they stand against domestic violence.
