These Lubbock Locations Will Be Closed on Labor Day

Ah, Labor Day. One of America's holidays with no true origin. We'll get into what that means in a second, but for now, let's go over the offices in Lubbock that will be closed on Monday, September 7.

Closed for Labor Day in Lubbock

Trash pickup will have an altered schedule, meaning that solid waste will be collected (gross) on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9, rather than Monday and Tuesday.

Speaking of trash, both Lubbock landfills will be closed on Labor Day as well. This also goes for attended drop-off stations.

Lubbock has several public libraries that, you guessed it, will all be closed on Labor Day, September 7. The Silent Wings Museum and the Garden & Arts Center will also be closed all day.

All community and senior centers will be closed for the holiday as well; however, the Burgess-Rushing Tennis Center will remain open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Labor Day.

You know what else will remain open on Labor Day? The Buddy Holly Center! If you didn't know, Buddy Holly's birthday happens to be September 7, 1936. As a result, the Center will be open  from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the iconic singer's 90th birthday.

Why Celebrate Labor Day?

We hear it every year, and kids rely on it to gauge when the school year kicks off, but what is Labor Day actually about?

We know neither the exact founder nor the exact date of the first holiday, but we typically treat September 5, 1882, as the first Labor Day. This was when thousands of union members marched to Union Square in New York City as they demanded shorter workdays.

Prior to this, industrial workers were often subjected to 7-day work weeks at 70+ hours each week. Of course, it wasn't established as a national holiday until 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed the Labor Day bill.
