Lubbock Set To Have A New Mayor In 2024

No matter what the results are next year, Lubbock will have a new Mayor. Current Lubbock Mayor Tray Payne announced on Wednesday that he will not seek a 2nd term as Mayor of Lubbock.

Mayor Payne issued a press release Wednesday afternoon and took to social media to make the announcement. Payne ran and won just two years ago securing 67% of the vote in an election that featured four candidates. In his announcement, Payne said it was time for him to step aside and let others lead.

“Over two years ago, Heidi and I felt the call for me to serve this city as mayor. We wanted to honor the importance of giving back to our community through leadership. There is a season for everything in life, and at this time and in this season, I need to step aside so that others may serve this great community. However, my family will continue to be involved in the stewardship of Lubbock and West Texas. It has been a great honor to serve on the city council, and rest assured that we will keep working hard until my current term expires in May.”

KFYO will continue to cover the race for Lubbock Mayor heading into 2024. Expect candidates to announce soon their intentions to run. Lubbock citizens will vote for Mayor along with Council Districts 2,4, and 6 in the May 4th Election. The first day to file for local races is January 17, 2024.
