Lubbock’s Historic Cactus Theater Unveils New Marquee
It's not a facelift, just a bit of an upgrade for one of Lubbock's iconic buildings.
Lubbock's historic Cactus Theater has been around since 1937 and has served as a movie theater, a storage facility, and since 1995, a live performance theater. And during that time the Cactus has had the same marquee with 750 feet of neon lights.
After 85 years, it might be time for a slight upgrade.
On Friday, crews were working to have the upgraded marquee ready to light up tonight. According to KAMC, officials with the Cactus Theater believe the upgraded marquee will capture the spirit of the Cactus Theater and the region.
“We feel that this is perhaps the way the theater facade would have been done in 1938 had it not been the Great Depression and the more simple CACTUS letters were used on the front. By adding the motifs of the prickly pear and mesas which depict the landscape of the region, we feel that it now fully captures the spirit of the name and we hope Lubbock citizens and patrons are proud of this facelift to this legendary venue at what is now 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue.”
I think the upgrades look great. Stop by and see them for yourself. The Cactus Theater is located at 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue.
