New Email Scam Alert: Texas Comptroller’s Office Issues Warning
2024 is off to a great running start with lots of new trends and foods occurring everyday but one thing remaining the same, almost, are the scams. The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Office is currently warning Texas residents of scams that could be affecting them.
The Scam
Currently scammers are sending emails impersonating the Open Records Division of the Texas Comptroller's Office. The emails state that the Texas citizens have a committed a code violation and then a link is attached that will supposedly take the violators to a website. That link is actually the way the scammers install destructive malware onto someone's computer, or electronic device. The reason for this is so that the scammers can steal all the information and sensitive data that is on that electronic device.
The Plan
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Office is advising all Texas residents that if they receive an email with "Code Violation Notice ref.:: 3364541.PDF" in the subject line to immediately report it via email to stop-spoofing@cpa.texas.gov. After you do report that scam email don't forget to also delete it and avoid clicking any links that would install that malware.
