Lubbock Mosquitoes Testing Positive For West Nile: How To Protect Yourself
Several mosquitoes have been confirmed to be carrying the harmful West Nile Virus, prompting officials to urge the public to spot the symptoms and destroy nests.
How Dangerous is West Nile Virus?
West Nile Virus (WNV) is most commonly spread when hosts are bitten by an infected mosquito. It's also the leading cause of mosquito-borne diseases in the U.S., responsible for the deaths of over 130 people each year.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms vary from mild to severe. Typically, humans who are infected by WNV will develop a headache, diarrhea, fits of vomiting, or even a rash. This is assuming that they show any symptoms to begin with.
You should see a doctor right away if you begin exhibiting any of these more severe WNV symptoms:
- High fever
- Neck stiffness
- Muscle weakness
- Confusion
- Tremors
How to Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites
The City of Lubbock Public Health Department offered ways to limit the risk of getting bitten by a mosquito. Wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants are your best bet when outside during times of high mosquito traffic (early morning and/or evening).
Also, it is extremely important to avoid having any standing water on your property. This means emptying flower pots, vases, bird baths, and any other vessels that carry water at least once a week.
This is because mosquitoes love standing water and actually use these sources to lay their eggs.
Finally, if you are using bug spray, make sure you are using an EPA-registered repellent on dark humid areas on your property, like under patio furniture and in the garage.
You can keep up with the Health Department's Facebook page to stay alert on the West Nile Virus situation, and good luck keeping those pesky pests away this summer!
