The surrounding areas of Lubbock are known as the wine capital of Texas due to the amount of grapes that are grown that are used for wine around the State. With a large variety of vineyards in the area as well it's a given that lots of people in Lubbock love wine but may not know so much about it. Texas Tech University is trying to change that.

Class is in Session

Texas Tech University's College of Human Sciences will be offering two separate courses for anyone who is interested in learning about wine. Those classes will be offered at Level 1, for beginners, and at a Level 2, for beginner to intermediate, through the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). Students are able to sign up for whichever course they would like, they do not need to take Level 1 to take Level 2.

Through this course students will receive a hands-on approach into the world of wine where they will explore using sight, smell and of course taste. In Level 1 students will gain the basic skills to describe wines accurately and make food and wine pairings. Level 2 involves a bit more skills because you will learn more about regionally imported grapes and wine while also trying to pinpoint different factors.

Where and How?

Classes for Level 1 and 2 are going to be held at the Overton Hotel, 2322 Mac Davis Lane in the RHIM Classroom. Level 1 class does start on January 27 through February 3 and Level 2 starts February 10 through March 2. Another Level 2 class will be held in Irving, Texas at Texas Tech University DFW on February 22 and 23. More information about these classes including pricing can be found online.
