I travel back and forth between Lubbock and Amarillo for this job twice a week.

Two hours to Lubbock, then two hours back to Amarillo every Tuesday and Thursday. That's eight hours of driving each week, a whole workday.

Needless to say, I know nearly every square mile of that drive like the back of my hand. And it's not a pretty drive. It's flat, it's endless, it's drab and it's boring.

But every dog has its day. And for just a few moments earlier this week, the South Plains had its day.

The cool front was moving through on my drive hom on Thursday. And between the smell of petrichor in the air and the sunlight in the clouds, it was the prettiest day that I had seen on that stretch of I-27.

I ended up pulling over at one of the little rest areas that dot the shoulder of I-27N (I always wondered why there were so many of them, but now I know it's for the people who need a cat nap to break through the road hypnosis) and snapping a few photos of the sky.

As I get older, I find myself having more appreciation for the little things. Rain on the open prairie is something I appreciate, especially in these dry times.

I hope you, too, find some of the beauty that I saw that day in the following photos.
