Imagine this: you're in danger. Doesn't matter what kind of danger, but you're in mortal danger and you call 911. You give your location to the nice operator on the other end, they tell you help is on the way, dear!

You remain in mortal danger, but soon you hear sirens. Relief washes over you. You look for the source. It's not a bird, it's not a plane.....it's a drone.

A police drone.

This Might Be The Future of Policing in Texas

If that scenario sounds outlandishly Orwellian to you, well...it might just be the near future, dear reader.

Bee Cave Police Department in Central Texas is currently giving this exact method a trial run as I type. According to KXAN out of Austin, the department has partnered with an area start-up by the name of Eve Vehicles Corporation to test out this 'police drone' solution.

A New Way To Respond to Emergency Calls

According to the article,

When an emergency call comes in, an officer or dispatcher puts in the coordinates, and the drone takes off. No one will be flying the drones.

Bee Cave Police Chief Brian Jones told KXAN that the drones will essentially act as an the eyes and ears at the scene and relay the information to law enforcement who may be en route to the scene.

Think of These Police Drones As Birds

Birds with a badge, anyway. In the same article, the CEO of Eve Vehicles Corporation explains that three drones will rest at specific posts within the city. They'll respond to 911 calls closest to them.

"Then when the call is over the bird (drone) comes back to its nest, then it recharges and waits for its next call.” CEO Roger Pecina told KXAN.

Dystopian Move or Effective Policing Tool?

While the police department and the start-up providing the drones insist that this is merely a tool for police departments to add to their capabilities, only time will tell if this is holds true. The Bee Cave drones is expected to take to Texas skies in the coming weeks.

If it works for Bee Cave, then your city just might be next.
