You know how when it's your birthday, you get your favorite meal? For some people it's prime rib...crab legs (my mom)...an entire deep-fried pizza. Whatever.

Well, my "birthday dinner" is always this exact menu:

  • Pinto Beans
  • Cornbread
  • Black Eyed Peas (my birthday is in December, so we freeze them just for my b-day. That's dedication.)
  • Squash
  • Mashed Potatoes
  • Cantaloupe

and for dessert...

  • more black eyed peas.

Sounds awesome, doesn't it??? For some, yes. For some..."NO! WHERE'S THE BEEF?!? DON'T YOU LIKE MEAT, YOU HIPPIE?!?"

To those people I say: "The meat is in the beans and peas. Now go back to to the great white north, Yankee."

Anyway, I come by my love of "soul food" naturally. Here's why...

My mom is a GREAT cook. She grew up in Acuff with very little money and her family pretty much grew what they ate. Mom was the only girl in a family of boys, so she helped my widowed grandmother in the kitchen from the time she was barely a teenager. Thankfully, she passed on her love of this food and the joy of cooking it to me. I'm just sick of buying my fresh veggies like a sucker at the grocery store.

So I planted a garden in my backyard!

Here's a quick video I made that gives you a quick tour of what I planted:

OK. I know that you mostly got a view of the barn when I panned to the garden. I do radio. I'm not a videographer like my talented buddy Mr. John Berry. (this shout-out sponsored by KCBD NewsChannel11...do you guys need an entertainment reporter with a face for radio???)

Anyway, here's a better view of the garden:

I wanted to do the black eyed peas, squash, potatoes & beans, but I live in the middle of Lubbock and only have so much room. I went the easiest route for the space I had. I planted things I like and that seemed the easiest to grow.

Again, I have NO IDEA what I'm doing here. I know you people have some tips for me! Leave 'em below so everybody can grow their own successful garden and we can all be the fattest survivors of the immanent zombie apocalypse!
