Little Things We Love About Lubbock: The ‘Old Fashioned’ at Shotgun Sue’s Saloon!

Lubbock has no shortage of bars and lounges where you can go to have a beer, cocktail or glass of wine. The problem is, there's only so many 'good' bars and lounges around town. Shotgun Sue's Saloon is in the good column...and here's one reason why!

They make the BEST Old Fashioned in this neck of the woods!

In case you've never had one before, according to FoodAndWine.com, a classic 'Old Fashioned' is made as such: In a mixing glass, stir together two ounces of bourbon, whiskey or rye, rich simple syrup, and Angostura bitters. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube, and garnish with an orange peel and/or a maraschino cherry, if desired.

That's for a VERY basic version of the cocktail. Go to Sue's and you'll get something much better! Co-owner Tim and their other highly-trained bartenders make 'em special by sometimes adding smoked peaches, 'special' cherries (I don't know how else to describe them, but they ain't no regular cherry!) quality whisky and a dash of flair when they create your cocktail.

I personally like a rye whisky in my Old Fashioned because it's more 'dry' tasting than a bourbon. I get the sweet from the cherry and the orange as well as the simple syrup. You don't want it too sweet!

So, go see Vince, Tim, Mari, Kambree, Jess, Brandon and the rest of the staff, saddle up to the bar and tell 'em your friend Landon sent ya' in for a classic Old Fashioned!
