I was born and raised on this little “island” on the South Plains. Lubbock has always been home, and let me tell you—this place is way more unique than outsiders (and sometimes even insiders) give it credit for. If you grew up here, you’ll probably recognize a few of these quirks that make us, well, us.

We’re Terrible with Time and Distance

In Lubbock, you can get anywhere in 15 minutes flat. I live out at Buffalo Springs Lake, which some people think is “the boonies.” Truth is, I can get downtown in 15 minutes, easy. But put a Lubbockite in Dallas or Houston and we lose our minds. Thirty minutes across town? With traffic?? Forget it—we’ll be late every time.

Let’s be honest—Texas Tech football has had its “building years.” Lots of them. But that doesn’t stop us from packing the Jones and yelling “Raider Power!” at the top of our lungs. Around here, we don’t just support the team—we are the team. And yes, next year will always be our year.

Mike Leach is Still a Legend

Mike Leach wasn’t just a football coach—he was a character, a storyteller, and, to most of us, practically a folk hero. When he passed in 2022, Lubbock mourned like it lost one of its own. Around here, the Pirate still sails. Swing your sword, Coach.

We Can’t Drive (But Neither Can You)

Come on, admit it. Nobody in this town knows how to use a turn lane. We stop in the middle of the street to turn, forget blinkers exist, and cut across three lanes when the spirit moves us. But hey, at least we’re consistent.

For a town of just over 319,000 people, we’ve got 352 restaurants. And we love every bite. Whether it’s a steak, Thai noodles, tacos, or Mediterranean, we eat with passion in the Hub City.

Let’s not kid ourselves—everyone in Lubbock has their Taco Villa order memorized. Mine’s a combo burrito, soft taco, and a tacorito with extra hot sauce. Speaking of which, don’t pretend you don’t have those little hot sauce cups stashed in your glovebox or kitchen drawer.

The Weather is Wild

Snow on Tuesday, 85 on Thursday. That’s just life on the Caprock. And because of it, we all have a favorite weatherperson—and a nickname for them, too.

Daytime? Totally fine. Nighttime? Different story. If you know, you know.

So, what’d I miss? What other “Lubbock-only” quirks should be on this list?
