Dozens and dozens of folks queued up in the cold on Thursday for what could possibly be their last chance to taste the amazing food of Lubbock's Thai Pepper restaurant.

The future of Thai Pepper is currently "unseen" as the family mourns the passing of their father Trakool "Kool" Srivarodom, who passed away in early January from complications of COVID-19.

With family-run restaurants, the quality of the dishes pours from the love of the cook preparing it. Kool was one half of the cooking staff, his wife the other. She's the one who made the free meals provided today, with donations benefiting Lubbock Impact.

From the family's Facebook post:

This Thursday, January 28th is my dad’s birthday. We wanted to do something special to celebrate it in honor of him.

Folks in line got to choose, while it lasted of course, from Thai Pepper's signature dishes, including their incredible pad thai, fried rice and their Kool Special, named for their father.

My heart hurts for this family, and honestly, it hurts for me, too. When I was vegan, they went out of their way to make me healthy, delicious vegan meals. I have so many happy memories of lunches spent braving the line to get their made-to-order, very fresh and delicious food. It's truly a loss for all of Lubbock.

If Thai Pepper does decide to reopen, I'll be back immediately. If they decide to let this chapter close, I will mourn the loss long with the rest of Lubbock.

Thank you, Thai Pepper, from the bottom of our hearts.
