One lucky area school has received a grant to update their library collection.

Frenship ISD's Willow Bend Elementary was selected, along with 300 other schools from 44 states, to receive a $5,000 grant through the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries. The grant is given out by the Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries to aid in updating and diversifying library collections every year since 2002.

"We are incredibly excited and honored to have been selected to receive this generous grant," said Jennifer Pierce, Willow Bend Elementary Principal.

Some of the book updates include new picture books, new early reader collections and adding to their Spanish collection.

Annually, Laura Bush would reveal her summer reading list which also included options for middle school readers. One of the middle school reading selections for on the reading list for 2022 is the book Gigi at the White House, written by Giovanna McBride, whose mother was the former chief of staff for Mrs. Bush. The book was inspired by a young Giovanna going on tour at the White House with her mother attending to her duties as chief of staff. Every school that received a grant also received a copy of the book as a gift from the McBride family.

The goal of the grants is to encourage students to love reading and learning: "...we know that opening a new books opens doors to new opportunities and learning," stated Mrs. Bush in a press release.

The Laura Bush Foundation has awarded more than $19.5 million to more than 3,300 schools since starting in 2002. The grant is supported by The Allstate Foundation and is a restricted fund at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, more information can be found online at bushcenter.org or laurabushfoundation.org.
