May is shaping up to be a big month in Lubbock, and whether you’re into sports, live music, or just looking for a reason to celebrate, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Here are four things to look forward to in the Hub City this month:
1. Sports Galore
Texas Tech fans, get ready! The Red Raiders' men's and women's tennis teams are hosting the NCAA First and Second Rounds at the McLeod Tennis Center from May 2nd–4th. Meanwhile, the Texas Tech baseball team hits the road to face West Virginia, and the softball squad travels to BYU. Plus, the Memorial Day Classic basketball tournament tips off May 24th at the APEX Event Center, featuring youth teams from across the region.
2. Live Entertainment
Music lovers, mark your calendars: MercyMe brings their 2025 tour to the United Supermarkets Arena on May 2nd, with Zach Williams and Sam Wesley joining the lineup. Comedy fans won't want to miss Jon Reep's stand-up show at the Cactus Theater on May 9th. And for country and bluegrass enthusiasts, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder take the stage at the Cactus Theater on May 15th!
3. Movie Releases
Hollywood is rolling out some big titles this month. "Thunderbolts" and the long-awaited "Rust" premiere on May 2nd. Later in the month, look out for "Friendship" starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," and the live-action "Lilo & Stitch," all hitting theaters on May 23rd.
4. Holidays and Observances
May is packed with reasons to celebrate. Cinco de Mayo falls on Monday, May 5th, followed by Mother's Day on Sunday, May 11th. Memorial Day wraps up the month on Monday, May 26th. Don't forget Star Wars Day on May 4th ("May the Fourth be with you"), National Teachers' Day on May 6th, National Mimosa Day on May 16th, Armed Forces Day on May 17th, and National Hamburger Day on May 28th!
