If you’re considering adding a four-legged friend to your family, it’s obviously important to choose a breed that matches your lifestyle—and your ability to meet their needs. Not all dogs are created equal when it comes to care, and some breeds require a little more time, money, and attention. A veterinarian recently outlined the five “neediest” dog breeds, and while these pups are lovable, they also bring their own unique challenges!

1. French Bulldogs

These popular pups are known for their adorable flat faces and affectionate personalities. However, they often deal with a laundry list of health issues, including neck, knee, and back problems, as well as heart and breathing difficulties due to their short snouts. They also have sensitive skin that might require special grooming products or diets.

2. Chihuahuas

Don’t let their tiny size fool you—Chihuahuas are full of sass and confidence. But behind that bold attitude, they’re prone to serious health concerns, including heart and eye diseases. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance companion, this might not be the breed for you.

3. Labrador Retrievers

Labs are America’s sweetheart dogs, but their boundless energy and curiosity often get them into trouble. They’re prone to paw injuries and knee joint issues, so active families with lots of time for play and exercise are a must for this breed. I own a lab--and trust me on this one--labs need a LOT of exercise or they'll use that energy to chew up your favorite pair of cowboy boots.

4. Great Danes

Known as the gentle giants of the dog world, Great Danes require a lot of food, regular nail trims, and consistent veterinary care to manage potential heart disease and cancers. They also WILL have hip issues. I also have a Great Dane (Doc Holliday) and you should know that they can be a financial and time investment, but their loving nature makes it worthwhile.

5. Dachshunds

With their long bodies and feisty personalities, Dachshunds are charming companions. However, they’re prone to weight issues and Intervertebral Disc Disease, which can lead to back problems. Regular exercise and careful handling are critical.

Owning a dog is a lifetime commitment, and these breeds highlight the importance of doing your research before bringing one home.
