Monterey Playoff Opponent & Likely Top 5 MLB Draft Pick Earns Gatorade Player of the Year Award
The Monterey Plainsmen have had a great run through the 2019 postseason and they are looking to win again this weekend. The only problem with that plan is that the Colleyville Heritage Panthers have the best high school player in the country on their team.
Bobby Whitt, Jr. was just named the National Gatorade Player of the Year.
Whitt is hitting .500 this season, with more than 50 RBI and 16 home runs. He's an Oklahoma Sooners commit, but he'll likely join the Kansas City Royals as the number two pick in the MLB draft in early June.
The Plainsmen have been on a bit of a Cinderella run, but don't tell them that. They have a 30-win season of their own coming into this weekend and have only lost one playoff game thus far, sweeping their first three playoff opponents before fighting back from a game one loss last weekend against Lake Dallas.
Monterey is 11-1 on neutral site turf this season and will meet Whitt and the Colleyville Heritage Panthers in Abilene, where the Plainsmen played the previous series.
You can listen to the Plainsmen take on Bobby Whitt Jr. and the CHHS Panthers this weekend on Talk 1340 with the first game getting underway on Friday night at 6 p.m.
