If you needed an excuse to get blitzed on a Wednesday, here it is. Happy National Tequila Day!

According to KXAN Austin, "Restaurant-goers in Texas consumed the most tequila. In fact, they consumed 119% more tequila than diners in any other state."

That's a LOT of tequila! I don't drink it myself, but I know a lot of people who do and many of them drink it for...health???

It's true! Tequila is lower in calories. A 1.5 oz shot of tequila contains around 98 calories, which is fewer than many other spirits.

It doesn't have artificial sweeteners. Tequila gets its natural sweetness from the agave plant, and doesn't contain added sugars.

It's also gluten free. Genuine tequila is made from a pure agave base and doesn't contain grains, so it's naturally gluten-free.

It has other properties too! Tequila may have potential health benefits, such as helping with bone health and digestion. (it only gives me heartburn, so I'm not sure about the whole 'helps with digestion' thing!)

A recent poll found people in Nevada drink the second most tequila at 2.3 bottles a year. Then it's Colorado and Arizona at 1.4, and California at 1.3. Pennsylvania ranked last at just a quarter-bottle a year. That's like four shots.

Here are a few quick margarita stats to help celebrate...

1.  76% of Americans like margaritas, including around a third who "love" them.

2.  Two-thirds prefer the frozen kind. A third said on the rocks.

3.  30% say margaritas are their go-to happy hour drink.

4.  5% "always" get a hangover from margaritas...maybe because one in four people say they never just have one.
