Hey, Lubbock! A new year is upon us, and with it comes a batch of new laws that will change the way we handle everything from vehicle inspections to online privacy. Let’s break it down so you know what’s coming your way starting January 1, 2025!

No More Vehicle Safety Inspections

First up, wave goodbye to those annual safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles. That’s right—thanks to House Bill 3297, you’ll no longer need that inspection sticker before registering your car. Instead, you’ll pay a $7.50 fee when renewing your vehicle registration.

But don’t throw your checklist away just yet. Newly purchased vehicles will still require an initial inspection fee of $16.75 to cover their first two years. While many drivers are celebrating, small businesses that relied on inspection services are not too happy.

Your Privacy, Your Rules

In the digital world, House Bill 4 expands data privacy rights for Texans. You’ll now have the power to opt out of personal data processing through browser settings or device preferences. Companies are required to be transparent about how they collect and use your data, giving you more control online.

Property Tax Relief for Schools

Under Senate Bill 2, schools can now apply for state funding if property tax revenues fall short, especially those affecting elderly and disabled homeowners. The Texas Education Agency will publish tax rate information, ensuring transparency for taxpayers.

Modernized Criminal Laws

Lastly, House Bill 4504 brings a much-needed refresh to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, streamlining laws for law enforcement, courts, and the public.

So there you have it, Lubbock! Whether you’re skipping the inspection line, protecting your data, or cheering for more school funding, 2025 is starting with a bang! What do you think of these changes?
