After hearing Northwest Lubbock residents' concerns about the safety of North Milwaukee Avenue, the City of Lubbock has approved the first reading to lower the speed limit in the area from 55 mph to 45.

A second proposed ordinance would create a school zone in the area, dropping the speed limit to 30 mph during drop off and pick up times for children attending Frenship ISD's Legacy Elementary School.

As evident from the video above and from looking at maps of the area, a speed limit of 55 on a two-lane road during a heavily congested time seems like an utter nightmare for parents attempting to merge back on North Milwaukee from Kemper Avenue. I've never had to do it, but I'm getting frustrated just thinking about it.

In addition to these proposed ordinances, representatives for the City have also promised road repairs and expansions. North Milwaukee is set to be repaved, and a north-bound deceleration lane will be added to allow parents to pull off and for through traffic to proceed. The construction should be completed in time for the 2018/2019 school year.
