‘Ready Player One’ Trailer: This Isn’t Just a Game
How many Easter eggs can you find in the new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. There’s the DeLorean, the Iron Giant, King Kong, the Power Loader from Aliens. And of course, the music in the trailer is a sad cover version of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. It’s almost harder to see the movie below the Easter eggs than to spot the Easter eggs themselves.
Thankfully, here’s the official plot synopsis to help us out:
The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.
The visuals are really striking, and I’m up for any new Spielberg blockbuster. I just hope there’s a legitimate movie here beneath all the fan service and callbacks. A movie needs to be more than references to other movies. Ready Player One opens in theaters on March 29.
