Hey Lubbock, get ready for a nostalgic dining experience you won’t want to miss! On Sunday, February 2, 2025, The Escondido Grill at Spirit Ranch is hosting a special tribute to the iconic local favorite--Furr’s Cafeteria! If you grew up enjoying those legendary cafeteria-style meals at Furr's, this is your chance to relive the flavors that made Furr’s a household name--until the disappeared seemingly forever.

The event is extra special for Jason Waters, the executive chef and owner of Escondido Grill. Jason’s family has deep ties to Furr’s Cafeteria—his great uncle, Cliff Andrews, was instrumental in developing the recipes that became staples at Furr’s. Cliff grew the business from a single cafeteria in Hobbs, New Mexico, to a chain of 80 locations. Jason’s grandfather, Harold Andrews, and other family members worked at Furr’s as butchers, managers, and even training directors, shaping the company’s success.

Furr’s Cafeteria started in 1946 inside Roy Furr’s grocery store and quickly became a go-to spot for families craving hearty, home-cooked meals. Unfortunately, the switch to an all-you-can-eat buffet concept led to its decline, with the last Furr’s closing in 2021. But the recipes—and the memories—are alive and well, especially for Jason and his family.

Escondido Grill, which opened in 2017, will transform into a tribute to Furr’s for this reservation-only event from 12 PM to 4 PM. Guests will enjoy original recipes in the beautiful setting of Spirit Ranch, complete with live piano music and the occasional peacock strolling by!

Here's a piece of art from my friend Jme Brock. You may remember Chris, the most famous Furr's waitress of them all!

Jason is thrilled to honor Furr’s legacy and the families who loved it. “This is a chance to reconnect with the flavors that shaped so many childhoods,” he said via press release. “It’s about more than food—it’s about celebrating the community and the memories.”

Seats are expected to fill up quickly, so make your reservations now and keep an eye on Escondido Grill’s social media pages for the official menu. Don’t miss this opportunity to step back in time and savor the classics that made Furr’s a West Texas institution.

I used to go every week to buy my grandmother dinner or lunch and my try ALWAYS had:

  • Both fried and baked fish
  • That brocoli, cauliflower and cheese cold salad stuff
  • Two salsbury steaks with the mushroom gravy
  • Okra
  • Mac and cheese
  • collard greens
  • Millionaire pie
  • Probably two or three other random things as well

What was on your tray when you visited your favorite Furr's location?

Lubbock, let’s raise a fork to the past and enjoy a day of great food, family, and memories at Spirit Ranch!
