In the afternoon hours of Tuesday, November 17th, 2020, the City of Lubbock's COVID-19 dashboard reported negative 18 available hospital beds, meaning that there were only 20 beds available for the 38 patients that needed them.

Later in the afternoon, however, the number had improved to negative 12. That still means that hospitals are at capacity.

KAMC News reported that hospital capacity has been steadily decreasing from April to right now. At the same time, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients has, for the most part, been on the rise since June.

As of the publication of this article, Lubbock County has reported a total of 26,145 total cases of COVID-19 and 277 deaths.

Trauma Service Area B, which includes Lubbock and multiple surrounding counties, has had a COVD-19 hospitalization rate above 15 percent since October 19th, with that number showing no signs of shrinking. As of Monday, November 16th, 25 percent of hospital patients in the area were positive for the novel coronavirus.

For just Lubbock County, 299 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized on November 16th. In the Trauma Service Area, that number was 380, with 83 patients admitted into the ICU in Lubbock County.

Just a week earlier, medical tents were set up outside of Covenant Health and University Medical Center so that both facilities can expand their capacity.
