The Texas Attorney General's office issued a press release on Tuesday (December 7th, 2021) confirming that a criminal investigation into a shooting death that was referred to the Texas Attorney General's office.

Though no names were used in the press release, the Texas Attorney General's office did say that the case had made national headlines. The only case that's been referred to the Attorney General's Office that has made national news in Lubbock lately has been the shooting death of Chad Read.

The attorney for Kyle Carruth said his client acted in self defense during the November shooting. Attorneys for Carruth and for Read's widow have both released cell phone video of the shooting from different perspectives. Last month, both the Lubbock County District Attorney's office and the Lubbock Police Department handed the investigation over to the Texas Attorney General's Office.

On Tuesday, the Attorney General's Office stated that they have received "repeated inquires" into the matter. The Attorney General's office did confirm that they have started a criminal investigation, but did not use any names or comment on the case:

The Attorney General of Texas has received repeated inquires as to a criminal investigation of a shooting death referred from Lubbock County, Texas. This shooting has received nationwide media coverage.

Our office has begun a criminal investigation into this shooting. During the pendency of any criminal investigation conducted by our office, we do not comment on the case to protect the integrity of the investigation. Accordingly, we will not be commenting on the facts of this case.

All criminal cases, including this case, must go through the steps of gathering evidence, reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and other actions.

No arrests have been made in the case, and local authorities have never confirmed the names of those involved. Instead, lawyers of those involved have released names and videos.
