If you thought city council meetings were dry, bureaucratic affairs, you haven’t been to Aransas Pass lately. Tuesday night’s council meeting turned into must-see drama, with fireworks flying during public comments. The main event? A verbal showdown between local resident Jason Followell and city officials that has everyone talking.

Followell, visibly upset, used his three minutes at the podium to launch an expletive-filled tirade against Police Chief Eric Blanchard, calling him a “piece of s**t.” Mayor Ramiro Gomez quickly stepped in, declaring, “Enough! I’m not going to put up with any defamation of character.” Despite several warnings about decorum, Followell continued, challenging the council’s authority to make him stop talking.

As Followell was escorted out by police, his attorney, CJ Grisham, stepped in to defend his client’s rights, calling the mayor’s enforcement of meeting rules “unconstitutional.” Grisham argued that profanity does not legally equate to disorderly conduct, saying, “What I just witnessed was a violation of Mr. Followell’s rights.”

Legal experts weighed in, adding even more fuel to the fire. Bill Aleshire, a Texas attorney specializing in open government, noted that while the council can enforce rules for conduct, they can’t discriminate based on the content of public comments. “The mayor didn’t necessarily violate their rights, but the behavior exceeded what’s typically allowed in an official government meeting,” Aleshire said.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Blanchard expressed his deep frustration over the incident, calling it “passionately disturbing.” Though neither Followell nor Grisham were arrested, they are currently under investigation.

BUT...

Grisham made good on his lawsuit threat--and here's the fantastic video of what happened next:
