Texas Falls to No. 2 on U-Haul Growth Index, But Don’t Count Us Out Yet
Fellow Texans, I have terrible news--the Lone Star State has been dethroned as the No. 1 growth state on the U-Haul Growth Index. For the first time since 2020, another state has taken the top spot, with South Carolina now wearing 'our' crown. But before you start worrying, let me assure you: Texas isn’t going anywhere. We’re still sitting strong at No. 2, and that’s a position we’ve held—or bettered—every single year since 2016!
What exactly does this ranking mean? U-Haul’s annual Growth Index tracks 'one-way moves' using its trucks, trailers, and containers. In 2024, Texas saw more than 51% of its U-Haul traffic as new arrivals to the state.. But South Carolina edged us out with 51.7%—barely squeaking by.
Why are so many people still moving to Texas? It’s simple: low cost of living, booming job markets, and that unbeatable Texas charm. Folks from across the country (yes, even Californians—don’t act surprised) are flocking here for a better quality of life...and fewer taxes. And let’s not forget, our food alone is worth the move!
Speaking of California, they ranked dead last on the list for the fifth year in a row. Guess they just can’t compete with our brisket and Blue Bell.
Other states in the top five include North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee, continuing the trend of people heading to the Southeast and Southwest. But let’s be honest: Texas is still the leader of the pack when it comes to what matters—being friendly and awesome!
So while we may have slipped a spot this year, the Lone Star State is still number one in our hearts. After all, it’s Texas—we don’t do “second best” for long. Keep an eye on us in 2025!
If you could bring back one restaurant or biz that closed in Lubbock, what would it be?
