Texas Launches Tough Billboard Campaign to Discourage Illegal Immigration
Texas is making headlines once again for its bold approach to tackling illegal immigration. Governor Greg Abbott recently unveiled a billboard campaign targeting Mexico and Central America, designed to warn potential migrants about the risks and consequences of crossing into the Lone Star State illegally.
The campaign, with a budget of $100,000, features stark messaging. One billboard reads: “How much did you pay to have your daughter raped?” Another warns: “Enter Texas illegally, and you will be arrested.” Abbott says the campaign isn’t just about discouraging migration—it’s about highlighting the harsh realities migrants might face on their journey, including exploitation and violence.
“Our goal is not only to discourage them from coming but to help them understand the consequences,” Abbott said, according to Reuters
Texas has been at the center of the immigration debate for years, with record numbers of migrants apprehended at the border since President Joe Biden took office in 2021. While Biden’s recent policy changes have reduced illegal crossings in recent months, Abbott is concerned about a potential surge before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office in January.
“There are many people who may make a last-gasp effort,” Abbott warned.
The campaign comes alongside Texas’ offer of 1,400 acres near the border to support Trump’s proposed mass deportation efforts. Abbott says these initiatives aim to prepare the state for upcoming changes in federal immigration policy.
While supporters of the campaign praise its direct approach, critics argue the messaging is inflammatory and could further escalate tensions. Regardless, the billboards are part of Texas’ ongoing push to secure the border and address immigration challenges head-on.
As the situation continues to unfold, Texans are watching closely, knowing that these efforts have significant implications for the state’s future.
