Millions of Texans have been without electricity, hot water or both for the last 2-3 days as a winter storm has crippled the state’s energy supply. Some politicians are pointing fingers. Some are calling for investigations. At least one is telling his constituents to stop their belly-aching.

Colorado City is a town of about 4,000 that sits along I-20 between Midland and Abilene. The Mayor (actually, “former mayor” now) wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post that “No one owes you are your family anything. The City and County, along with power providers or any other service owes you NOTHING!”

Typos and misspellings aside, it makes one wonder why Tim Boyd ever got INTO politics if he thinks it’s no one’s job to help constituents in a life-threatening emergency.

Boyd has resigned as mayor (probably for the best) and the offending post has been deleted. You can still find screen shots all around the Internet, though. Boyd appears to be one of those “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” types. (For the record, literally pulling yourself up by your bootstraps is physically impossible. Try it sometime before you tell someone else to do it!)

Other comments, grammatical and spelling errors intact, include:

“I’m sick and tired of people looking for a damn handout!”

“Only the strong will survive and the weak will parish (sic).”

“If you don’t have electricity you step up and come up with a game plan to keep your family warm”

I’m not sure if Boyd is telling his freezing constituents to march down to the natural gas pipeline with a wrench and fix it themselves, or if he’s recommending they start busting up furniture to use as firewood. Whichever, it seems like “reaching out for help from your municipal/county government” seems to fit the advice of, “coming up with a game plan” to keep your family from dying.

Finally…

“Am I sorry that you have been dealing without electricity and water; yes! But I’ll be damned if I’m going to provide for anyone that is capable of doing it themselves!”

Boyd’s screed also put the blame vaguely on “socialists”. In his “apology” he explained how HE was the actual victim since people were mean to him about his post on Facebook AND how he wasn’t even really the mayor anyway since he had already decided not to run again.

All of this played out on the “Mitchell County Issues” page on Facebook. If you’d like to check it out…it is A REAL HOOT! Check it out here.
