The Texas Tech Foundation is reporting a data breach.

According to a press release, the service provider for the Texas Tech Foundation called Blackbaud was recently the victim of a data breach that occurred in May 2020.

The breach apparently impacted over 200 organizations worldwide, and the Texas Tech Foundation says they were only notified of the results of the breach on July 16th.

On their website, Blackbaud describes the incident as an attempted ransomware attack, but it was mostly prevented by the company's cyber security division. Whoever did try to encrypt the company's files did manage to escape with a subset of data that included some people's personal information.

As an added precaution, Blackbaud says they did end up paying a an undisclosed random amount for verification that the subset of data that was stolen was destroyed and could not be misused.

Blackbaud and the Texas Tech Foundation both claim that no personal financial information was stolen, such as Social Security numbers or bank account information.
