Outgoing Texas Tech IFC Student President Apologizes for Racially Charged Remarks Made on Social Media
The now-former student president of Texas Tech’s Interfraternity Council who was involved in a social media controversy Thursday night has resigned.
Kyle Mitchell posted the following apology on Twitter,
"I now recognize that the comments I made on GroupMe were egregious, disgusting and lacked morality. For that, I am deeply sorry, and want to extend my sincerest apologies to all those who have been hurt by my comments, both within and outside of the Texas Tech community.
I take full responsibility for my actions. I have resigned as the IFC President, because my comments do not reflect the values of the Texas Tech fraternities. And as a leader, I know I let the community down by my actions.
I cannot take back what I said, as the damage and hurt to others has already occurred. But please know that I will continue to own my mistakes and learn from this moment.Sincerely,
Kyle D. Mitchell"
On Friday, the Texas Tech IFC announced that Kyle Mitchell has left the IFC and a new student president has been appointed in his place. Mitchell’s comments concerning illegal immigration and race were made in a GroupMe chat involving other Texas Tech students.
Texas Tech officials are continuing an investigation into the incident.
