Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and with it comes the great American tradition of packing up and heading out in the Family Truckster for turkey, football, and family time!

This year, Triple-A expects a record-breaking 80 million travelers nationwide, up from 78 million last year. If you’re one of the 72 million driving or the 5.8 million flying--listen up--because WHEN you travel could make or break your holiday.

First off, Tuesday, November 26, and Wednesday, November 27, are shaping up to be absolute nightmares on the road. Peak traffic on Tuesday is expected between 1:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M., while Wednesday will see the worst traffic from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. If your plan is to beat the rush, you might want to leave before lunchtime—or better yet, way earlier.

Heading back? Brace yourself. The post-Thanksgiving rush peaks on Sunday, December 1, from noon to 6:00 P.M., and again on Monday, December 2, between 9:00 A.M. and 6:00 P.M. That Monday mess is going to be the toughest, thanks to the combination of holiday travelers and regular commuter traffic heading to work and such.

So, when’s the best time to hit the road for Turkey Day festivities? Thanksgiving Day itself. Traffic tends to ease up, so if you don’t mind trading an early start on your favorite Thanksgiving foods for a smoother drive, this is your best option

No matter when or where you’re traveling, remember to pack some snacks, load up the family, and most importantly, bring patience. And for those of you staying in Lubbock this Thanksgiving, enjoy the lighter local traffic and extra mashed potatoes.

Safe travels, y’all! And happy Thanksgiving!
