If you’ve spent enough time in Texas, you’ve probably seen some strange things in our famously large sky. Turns out, we’re not alone—figuratively speaking. With 21,905 UFO sightings reported in the Lone Star State over the past 40 years, Texas ranks sixth in the nation for spotting mysterious flying objects, according to a new study using data from the National UFO Reporting Center.

Just last weekend, someone in Rockwall reported seeing a metallic, cigar-shaped object floating overhead. Meanwhile, back in March, folks in San Antonio lit up social media with videos of strange lights dancing across the sky. SpaceX quickly claimed responsibility, saying it was from a rocket launch, but some residents weren’t so sure. And who could forget the viral TikTok of a (possibly tipsy) man mistaking San Antonio’s Tower of the Americas for a UFO? Classic.

Across the country, people are buzzing about UFOs, especially in places like New Jersey and Oregon, where recent sightings of car-sized drones and corkscrew-patterned objects have left people scratching their heads. But here in Texas, UFO chatter is nothing new. From the infamous Stephenville sightings in 2008 to the countless reports of strange lights over West Texas deserts, and, of course, the 'Lubbock Lights', we’ve been at this for a while.

For comparison, California leads the nation with 36,286 sightings—but we’ve got plenty of open skies and a healthy dose of curiosity here in Texas. Even skeptics have to admit, some of these sightings are downright weird.

So, what’s going on? Satellites? Military experiments? Or are the little green men finally making a pit stop on their way to Whataburger? Whatever the case, Texans aren’t shy about looking up and sharing what they see.

What about you, Lubbock? Seen anything strange in the skies lately?

If you could change one thing about Lubbock, what would it be?
