This week, two Lubbock citizens announced their respective candidacies for Lubbock City Council District 1 in May's municipal election. Pat Kelly [pictured, above] and Christy Martinez-Garcia [pictured, below] will be vying for the District 1 seat, after current City Councilman Juan Chadis announced he would not be running for re-election.

Kelly is the owner of Pat Kelly Construction, and he served 30 years with the Lubbock Police Department. Earlier this week, Kelly said his focus on the city council would be stopping violent crime, banning abortion, lowering property taxes, and lowering utility bills.

Concerning ERCOT, Kelly has said, "ERCOT is wrong for Lubbock. I have grave concerns about the ability of ERCOT to provide reliable electric service and when elected I will work to see what other options might be available if the need arises."

Martinez-Garcia also said she supports downtown growth and advocates for local businesses to improve the economic conditions of District 1.

Early Voting starts April 25, Election Day is Saturday, May 7.
