Lubbock’s University Medical Center (UMC) was just named one of the best hospitals in the world in Newsweek’s 4th annual World’s Best Hospitals. The outlet analyzes and recognizes the best hospitals across more than 25 countries.

According to a press release published by everythinglubbock.com, UMC ranked number 385 out of thousands of hospitals, putting them within the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated. Each hospital was evaluated based on medical expert’s recommendations, patient satisfaction, and medical key performance indicators (KPIs). After evaluating those factors, UMC was the only “best” hospital in our region.

Of course, UMC’s staff is extremely proud of this ranking.

“The honors received belong to the employees, volunteers, and physicians of UMC – for their remarkable work and passionate service, particularly through the last two years," said Mark Funderburk, CEO of UMC. "Thank you TeamUMC!”

After seeing this, I reached out to UMC employees to get their thoughts on working for a hospital named one of the best in the world.

The first employee I spoke to has been with UMC for about a year. When I asked him about the honors UMC received, he said, “I think it’s really cool to get that kind of recognition.” He continued by telling me how he has been extremely happy with his time working for the company, “I love working here and it really is just a big family. To be able to pass that down to the patients and make them feel a part of the family and have them rate us so highly is very humbling.”

I then spoke with a new hire at UMC to get her perspective on why UMC was somewhere she wanted to work. She started working for UMC within the next couple weeks.

"My goal when looking for a job was to find a place that I felt like I could be helping make a difference in others lives with my work, and UMC really promotes the idea that the work of all employees has an effect to improve the work environment, work flow, and patient care," she said.

I asked her what she thought about UMC receiving such an honor. "With UMC's ideals it does not surprise me they are in the top percent of hospitals worldwide. They seem to value their employees work and strive to always make UMC better," she told me.

It's great to know that the people that work for UMC enjoy working there because that is something that really translates to the patients and make the company appealing to future employees. If you enjoy where you work you're more likely to provide great care for your patients, and that seems to be what's happening at UMC. I want to congratulate UMC on this honor and I hope to see them climb even higher in next year's ranking.
