If you have driven by 4th and Slide Road in the last few days, you may have noticed a new sign going up along with construction happening at the old Starbucks location. This week the name of the new business moving into the old Starbucks location was revealed. Gong cha.

So what is Gong cha?

Well, if you are a fan of bubble tea you are going to be very excited. Gong cha is one of the most recognized bubble tea brands around the world. Gong cha has over 1500 locations around the world and they are growing in the United States with over 100 locations now open.

Gong cha is a Taiwan-style drink franchise that started in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and has now made it's way to Lubbock, Texas. Gong cha just opened their second San Antonio location this past weekend and have recently opened in in Boston near Northeastern University and in the Bronx, NY. It's pretty obvious that Gong cha is a successful business that continues to grow here in the United States and in Texas.

Translated, Gong Cha means "tribute tea for the emperor" according to their website.

According to their website, Gong cha offers premium quality tea, products, and services.

The success of Gong Cha in Taiwan was proof that customers responded favorably to the premium quality tea, products & services offered:

  • Fresh Tea brewed every 4 hours
  • Pearl (bubbles) cooked to perfection every 4 hours
  • Tea sourced from the finest Taiwan tea estates
  • Strict quality control for all ingredients

Gong Cha USA specialty known as “Milk Foam” became a hit with many customers as it offered a new take on tea-based drinks. Our milk foam is a slightly salted cream topping above freshly brewed tea.

When will Gong cha open and where?

I reached out to Gong cha directly and was told they expect to open sometime in December. They will open in the old Starbucks location at 405 Slide Road.
