Does having the holiday fall on a weekend make it better? ! I think so! It's sure great to have the day after Christmas and the day after New Year's to observe the holiday.

However, celebrations aside, we still need to be able to take care of business, make sure bills are paid, know when we can pick up groceries and when all that celebratory trash will be picked up.

So here's what I found out about openings and closings for New Year's Day 2017, which falls on Sunday this year.

January 2, 2017 is officially a Federal Holiday.

Banks and federal offices are officially observing New Year's Day on January 2, 2017.

The City of Lubbock is also observing New Year's on January 2nd, and there will be no trash pickup that day. If you're concerned about this, you can call to request an early pick up.

United Supermarkets and Walmart are going to remain open their normal business hours and will not be closing for the holiday.

You're able to pay some of your bills at the United Customer Service office during the store's open hours. Bills you can pay at United stores include LP&L, Atmos, Xcel, AT&T, Windstream, and MCI. Good to know this option is available.. You can pay most utility bills at Walmart as well.

Now you can plan ahead a little more and enjoy the holiday!
