Winter is returning to the South Plains, as a strong area of low pressure works its way over the region, rain, freezing rain, and snow are expected to impact much of the region by tonight.

Rain will begin today, Monday, Feb. 10th, as early as 8 a.m. for parts of the Southern South Plains, including Seminole, Brownfield and Lamesa. Showers will continue to spread north toward Lubbock, then diminish later this afternoon.

Overnight, a strong surge of cold air will dive into the region and interact with atmospheric moisture to bring mainly snowfall to the northwestern South Plains and southwestern Panhandle communities. Temperatures will drop overnight into the 20s, and by Tuesday morning, much of the central to western South Plains will receive wintry precipitation, including snow.

Snow accumulation data suggests that Lubbock county could receive 2 to 3 inches,  which will make roads hazardous as temperatures struggle to get above freezing during the day Tuesday.

Roads will be particularly dangerous Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Motorists are strongly encouraged to drive to conditions. Remember to Slow Down and Move Over to avoid collision with other vehicles.
